(EN) South African theatre producer Mike van Graan comes to the Appeltheater with his new play Some mothers' sons. It is a play about confrontation and violence, which has already proved a prizewinner in his home country, South Africa.

Back in the 1980s, two men from starkly different backgrounds meet each other. Vusi was beaten up by security police and Braam, a young lawyer, defends him. They become friends and later leaders of an organization fighting for human rights.
Twenty years after their first meeting, Braam becomes the victim of a violent crime. He feels betrayed and despairing, commits an act of revenge. The roles have reversed and this time, Vusi is Braam's defence lawyer.
(NL) Mike van Graan schrijft scherpe politiek kritische stukken. Hij verstaat de kunst om vanuit menselijke en herkenbare problemen een situatie te creëren die politiek en moreel gezien enorme gevolgen heeft op het leven van de betrokkenen. Mike van Graan is het boegbeeld van het hedendaagse Zuid-Afrikaanse kritische theater.
Twee mannen met een verschillende achtergrond ontmoeten elkaar halverwege de jaren tachtig. Vusi werd brutaal afgetuigd door de veiligheidspolitie. Braam, een jonge advocaat, neemt zijn verdediging op zich. Ze raken bevriend en leiden later een organisatie die vecht voor de rechten van de mensen. Twintig jaar na hun eerste ontmoeting is Braam slachtoffer van een gewelddadige misdaad. Hij voelt zich verraden door de wet en onderneemt in een daad van wanhoop een wraakactie. De rollen zijn nu omgekeerd; Vusi neemt als advocaat de verdediging van Braam op zich. Twee mensen ervaren op een persoonlijke manier de confrontatie met geweld in verschillende omstandigheden en in een andere tijd. Hoe reageren ze?

As usual, award-winning Van Graan does not disappoint with the pen. He is someone who can push the personal/political envelope and compel an audience to engage with his work. His intelligent texts come from right under the thumb he has so firmly planted on the political pulse of our country, with sharp, fast-paced dialogue. He is one of the few playwrights who, through his plays, tests and challenges our principles - both personally and politically. Some mothers' sons is The Crucibles John Proctor stuff - universally apposite with a characteristically South African flavour. (Rafiek Mammon, Cape Times, Wednesday April 5 2006)
Mike van Graan is making a brave statement with his new play: The current mayhem by violent criminals in South Africa is equivalent to the onslaught of apartheid forces against democracy in the 1980s? In his trademark dexterous dialogue, Van Graan introduces the issues of violence versus non-violence, sacrifice versus growth... this short, yet complex text throws fresh light on old issues... the most harrowing revolves around the taking up of arms against injustice... The dialogue brilliantly exposes the fine line between the rule of law and anarchy. It is not about black and white; it is about our humanity - guarding our humanity because it is the fence between the rule of law and anarchy. This is invigorating theatre, not least because of the intense and nuanced performances... Hierdie sort ooglopend universele aanslag kenmerk nie alle kuns nie. Sommige kunstenaars verkies of uitdruklik kommentaar op eietyds kwessies to lewer. Die geheim is dan om nie antwoorde to gee nie, maar vrae to stel - en so dat geen maklike antwoorde gegee kan word nie.
