Dans

Introduction Dans - seizoen 2004/2005/2006 + 2009/2010

Dans (Dance) is directed by Geert de Jong. The three characters in Dans manage to escape for a while their daily routines. They may be like ships passing in the night, but their lives will never be the same again.

Walking past a dancing academy, a man sees a woman through the window. He takes a sudden decision, enters, and, to his own surprise, signs up for a ballroom dance course.

Dans was inspired by the 1996 film Shall We Dance by Masayuki Suo and the recent American remake starring Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez.

What the papers said about Dans:

'Geert de Jong reduced the number of characters to three, and the dialogue to its bare necessities, the action to a single room. ... Bashful glances, almost invisible gestures, and a body language that appears to be distanced, but is implicitly gentle and warm. It will be hard to forget those long mutual gazes.' (NRC Handelsblad)

'Dans presents hardly any dialogue, even less interpretation and mostly non-verbal communication. There is no 'text', in the classical sense, and motives and backgrounds are barely explained; instead, we share in a relatively minor experience of little or no consequence, but which leaves, nevertheless, its definite imprint on all three characters. A well made performance, offering some great dancing.' (Haagsche Courant)

'a melancholic theatrical performance... a lot of dancing, a minimum of words... the air is alive with unspeakable desire.' (de Volkskrant)

'The number of characters is reduced to three and the dialogue is limited to almost no more than mere dancing instructions. Unexpectedly, however, through Geert de Jong's approach one becomes almost involuntarily involved in a silent, almost invisible tragedy. Because the actors were thoroughly instructed by dancing coach Christine Ruygvoorn, Geert de Jong could concentrate on directing their body language and facial expressions. ... 'Dans' is both refreshing and intriguing.' (Trouw)

'De Appel dances almost without any words.' (UIT in Den Haag)
