BIG5

BIG5 in English

Dance and music theatre: Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre/Jay Pather

One of the highlights of BIG5 will be Body of Evidence by South African theatre producer Jay Pather. Thanks to a donation by the Hivos Cultuurfonds, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary, the Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre, will be able to take this production to Europe for the first time.

 Body of Evidence

Body of Evidence

Body of Evidence is a performance about the body, functioning as a bundle of memories. No matter how hard we sometimes try to forget, our body remembers more than our brain. Body of Evidence is a physical performance, showing the power of our body. In Body of Evidence, South African theatre producer Jay Pather manages to take the audience on a ninety minute long roller coaster of emotions such as pain, fear and joy. With his performance, Pather hopes to convey the strength of South African bodies and minds to the Dutch audience.

Theatre: Toneelgroep De Appel

De Appel has made two performances with De Appel´s own actors and drama students from Dutch and South African academies.

All I Could See Was Me, David Johnson

David Johnson

Picture yourself in a room full of mirrors. Imagine life as a collection of moments. These moments make us who we are. It is only when we reflect on our moments that we are able to see ourselves objectively, through the eyes of the people we have interacted with, impacted on. This piece explores the universality of memory and experience, through multimedia and live performance, leading the audience into the world of the subconscious, so that they too may see their moments and remember.

Rhinocerocity, Aus Greidanus Jr.

Aus Greidanus Jr.

For me, our performance is the result of the conversation and confrontation between two parts of the world. Inspired by and based on the French/Romanian playwright Ionesco's Rhinoceros, in which a man watches hisfriends and neighbours turn into rhinoceroses. We try to show the transformation people have to undergo when wanting to belong to a certain group (or being forced to adapt) on multiple levels, by changing the identity of the particular groups: man vs woman, black vs white, animal vs man, South African vs Dutch. All this seen through the eyes of a Dutch soccer fan, waking up one morning in a strange cafe on the South African Savannah...

Through the eyes of these ‘self-made' film-makers, the audience is offered a broad view of the current South Africa. Exclusively for this special programme, versatile filmmaker Aryan Kaganof - also known as Ian Kerkhof - will come to The Hague to talk about his work. As a writer, editor or producer, he has contributed to various films, one of which is Welcome Nelson directed by Graig Mathew. Welcome Nelson (Dutch premiere!) is a magnificent and moving documentary featuring unshown footage of the first moments after Mandela's release; sure to touch your very soul!

The programme will be compiled by Heidi Lobato, director of  Africa in the Picture Film Festival (www.africainthepicture.nl). Africa in the Picture is the ultimate platform for artistic African and Diaspora films from Africa, North and South America, Europe and the Caribbean.

Visual Art: Titus Matiyane

Titus Matiyane

In the foyer, Theater aan het Spui will put on the exhibition Cities of the World about the work of the South African artist Titus Matiyane (1964).

Matiyane is a versatile artist, sculptor and musician. He lives and works in Atteridgeville, a township near Pretoria. At a very young age, he became fascinated by everyday life in the townships, and the growth, development and transformation of these towns. Since 1990, he has been making huge, colourful panoramic drawings of towns and landscapes that give the impression of Matiyane observing these towns from the air, whereas in reality he only flew for the first time in 1998. In his unique panoramas, which vary in size from 6, 12, 24 till 46 x 1.5 metres, he shows his African view of his and our world.

The exposition is compiled by Annemieke de Kler and Stephen Hobbs (Johannesburg) and shows Matiyane's panoramas of Johannesburg, Durban, Capetown, Tanzania, Mali-Senegal, Dubai, and Berlin.
